However, Voldemort&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Avada Kedavra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Avada_Kedavra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killing curse<\/a>\u00a0rebounded and seemingly destroyed him, leaving a lightning bolt-shaped scar on Harry&#8217;s forehead.<\/p>\n<p>Hagrid takes Harry to\u00a0<a title=\"Diagon Alley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diagon_Alley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diagon Alley<\/a>, where the latter discovers his fame among wizards while buying a\u00a0<a title=\"Magical objects in Harry Potter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magical_objects_in_Harry_Potter#Wand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wand<\/a>, an owl named Hedwig, and other school supplies. A month later, Harry takes the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Hogwarts Express\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hogwarts_Express\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hogwarts Express<\/a>\u00a0to Hogwarts. He befriends\u00a0<a title=\"Ron Weasley\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ron_Weasley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ron Weasley<\/a>, a first-year student, during the journey. He also meets\u00a0<a title=\"Hermione Granger\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hermione_Granger\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hermione Granger<\/a>\u00a0and has a confrontation with\u00a0<a title=\"Draco Malfoy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Draco_Malfoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Draco Malfoy<\/a>. At Hogwarts, a magical\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Sorting Hat\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sorting_Hat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sorting Hat<\/a>\u00a0assigns each first-year student to a\u00a0<a title=\"Hogwarts\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hogwarts#Houses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House<\/a>. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are assigned to Gryffindor, although the Hat considers putting Harry in Slytherin.<\/p>\n<p>Harry&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Broomsticks in Harry Potter\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Broomsticks_in_Harry_Potter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">broomstick flying<\/a>\u00a0ability earns him a place on the Gryffindor\u00a0<a title=\"Quidditch\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quidditch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quidditch<\/a>\u00a0team as the Seeker. Harry and Ron discover a gigantic three-headed dog guarding a trapdoor one night. During Harry&#8217;s first Quidditch match, his broomstick attempts to throw him off. Snape&#8217;s strange behaviour during the match convinces Hermione that he jinxed Harry&#8217;s broom. On Christmas, Harry receives an anonymous gift \u2013 his father&#8217;s\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cloak of Invisibility (Harry Potter)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cloak_of_Invisibility_(Harry_Potter)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">invisibility cloak<\/a>.
